The Scary Truth Behind Halloween

I vividly remember the months of October when the Halloween catalogue would find its way to my doorsteps and eventually into my hands. The joy of envisioning alter egos, the potential to be whoever you want on that one day of the year, was a highlight of my youth. Little did I know as a kid the impact my dreamy halloween costume would have on the environment.

It is expected that consumers plan to spend $3.2 billion on costumes, $2.6 billion on candy, $2.7 billion on decorations and $390 million on greeting cards. NRF’s Annual Halloween Spending Survey, conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics

It’s kinda mind-boggling to think this much money is being spent on things we can only use one day of the year and for that reason people get rid of much of the stuff the very next day. What happens to that halloween costume, all the candy wrappers and plastic spider web decor? The scary truth is it ends up in a landfill.

As that little girl who looked forward to this day every year, there is no way I’m giving up Halloween. It’s just way too much fun. I am, however, going to find creative ways to feel good about celebrating it without trashing the earth. So far I’ve thought of a few ways we can all make Halloween more Green.
